Helen Beatrix Potter (/ˈbiːətrɪks/,[1] 28 July 1866 – 22 December 1943) was an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist; she was best known for her children’s books featuring animals, such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Born into an upper-middle-class household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets and spent holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developing a love of landscape, flora and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted.

Potter’s study and watercolours of fungi led to her being widely respected in the field of mycology. In her thirties, Potter self-published the highly successful children’s book The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Following this, Potter began writing and illustrating children’s books full-time.

Potter wrote thirty books, the best known being her twenty-three children’s tales. With the proceeds from the books and a legacy from an aunt, Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey in 1905; this is a village in the Lake District in the county of Lancashire. Over the following decades, she purchased additional farms to preserve the unique hill country landscape. In 1913, at the age of 47, she married William Heelis, a respected local solicitor from Hawkshead. Potter was also a prize-winning breeder of Herdwick sheep and a prosperous farmer keenly interested in land preservation. She continued to write and illustrate, and to design spin-off merchandise based on her children’s books for British publisher Warne until the duties of land management and her diminishing eyesight made it difficult to continue.

Potter died of pneumonia and heart disease on 22 December 1943 at her home in Near Sawrey at the age of 77, leaving almost all her property to the National Trust. She is credited with preserving much of the land that now constitutes the Lake District National Park. Potter’s books continue to sell throughout the world in many languages with her stories being retold in songs, films, ballet, and animations, and her life is depicted in two films and a television series.

Hello summer

– Have you ever been inside?

– Yes….once…

– Is it large underground?

S námahou som lovila slová v pamäti…

– Yes, it is one or two …eee underground….

– Are there weapons, like on that picture?

– Yes, but it was repaired by …ehm…not state, but….keen citizen…it was devastated after communism and some people decided to …eer….repair it…I dont know, if you can understand me, – dodala som, ked som videla ako sa tvári.

– A little bit…so, not government, but volunteers repaired it, right?

– Yes, volunteers…that was the right word…it is open from eleven to eighteen, ukázala som na tabuľu, aby som nevyzerala tak blbo.

– Yes, but only on Saturday (sakra, zase vedľa!)

– Yes, only on Saturday, povedala som smutne.

– Are you from Bratislava?

– Yes…

– And do you bike hard every day?

(me, confused:)

– No …actually this is the first time I went on bike….

– First time? tvári sa neveriaco a trochu sa zamračí.

Dokelu, už si myslí, že som divná.

– I am working everyday and dont have time for myself…., vyhováram sa.

– But you dont look like that, you have great figure.

– Oh, thank you….červenám sa a už beriem nohy na plecia

– So….enjoy….rozlúčim sa.

Sadám na bajk a zdrhám hore na hrádzu, opaľujem zas Filmárika a Filmušku a vravím si damn, that was weird :)))

Cestou ešte zistím, že mi zas unikol dobrý ska/reggae koncert pri Dunaji, šliapnem do pedálov, vybehnem zas na hrádzu a fičím do Ovsišťa. Cestou zrazím asi päťdesiat mušiek a asi päť z nich zjem, sledujem pokosené polia vo svetle zapadajúceho slnka, v Ovsišti to zalomím vpravo a už mám plán, dám si zmrzku.

Raised by books

I was raised by books and I am not ashamed of it.

Books were surrounding me from an early age, and I was eager to dive in stories that books offered me. I don’t remember my very first book, but I remember the ones that touched me the most. One of them was a little prince. I, only seven years old, realized that when I will grow up, I would be a completely different person. And I will not remember how I used to be as a child. That idea was scary.

From then to now, I am returning in my thoughts to my child days, trying not to forget what was it like. That feeling of wonder and freedom. That lust for life. The emotions and love to everything that lives. Innocence. The importance of inner innocence and purity.

Books offer wide scale of feelings and experience. You can become an hero, a soldier, a princess or a poor kid. You can travel around the world and discover new islands, get lost in the sea, fall in love or find a real friend. How beautiful the world of books is.
